Prior to 1949 there was no alpha code and other methods must be used to date the rifle. The alpha code should be preceded by one or two numbers enclosed in a circle on top of the barrel, typically between the rear sight & the receiver. 460 12 GA DBL SH SAVAGE (3) 460 20 GA DBL SH SAVAGE (3) 2070 AUTOWING 12 GA SEMI SH UNIVERSAL (2A) 2071. This started with A in 1949 and did not use O or Q, B for 1950 will be the earliest for a 29-B.
The easiest is by the alpha code contained in the inspectors mark. 29-B's should have a date code, there should be a one or two digit number followed by a letter in a small circle stamped on the barrel just ahead of the receiver. (But may also be applicable to other models) It is very likely that there is more information to be had from reading the entire thread but it is quite lengthy and I am pressed for time right now.ĭating Savage/Stevens rifles - specific to the Model 4,5,6 and 85,86,87 series and variants.
